Press Release: Primal Fear – New Religion due September 21, 2007

Frontiers Records is excited to announce all details for the highly anticipated studio album from the mighty German Metal Masters Primal Fear entitled NEW RELIGION to be released in Europe on September 21.

Primal Fear started the songwriting for their new cd in October 2006 and the recording started shortly later, at the House Of Music studio with engineer & co-producer Charlie Bauerfeind (Blind Guardian, Saxon, Hammerfall) and longtime producer and band member Mat Sinner. “I really feel electrified”, says Sinner “I never had such a feeling since the release of the first Primal Fear album in 1998. We never worked harder on an album before”, while singer Ralph Scheepers adds: “New Religion is definitely the start of a new chapter in the history of Primal Fear. The fact we’ve signed with a new record company and bringing back our good friend Henny Wolter into the band sets more energy free than the launch of a rocket. The band is in the best mood since many many years! Can’t believe that? Listen to the album!”


The line-up on the album saw Randy Black proving again, that he’s one of the world class drummers at the moment and singer Ralf Scheepers delivered his most exciting and outstanding vocal performance in his career. Most of the guitars were played by Stefan Leibing. Starbreaker and Allen/Lande producer/guitarist Magnus Karlsson helped out with two stunning guitar solos, before Henny Wolter rejoined the band and played some more lead & rhythm guitars on the album.

Epica’s lead singer Simone Simons was invited to studio to sing the first duet in Primal Fear recording history, the song ‘Everytime It Rains’ which seems to be the next hit in Fear’s recording career. For the first time, the band moved to the Galaxy Studio in Belgium, to work with award winning engineer Ronald Prent (Rammstein, Iron Maiden, Manowar) on the mix of the album. Mat Sinner states: “We are totally satisfied about the result and the final sound. Ronald did a great job. In my view, New Religion sounds more powerful than the predecessor, even you can hear every single tone crystal clear”
Another very surprising song, with a huge wall of atmosphere and drama ‘Fighting The Darkness’ is divided in 3 different sections: the first part ‘Fighting The Darkness’ is, according to Mat Sinner “the best sounding tune the band has released so far”, followed by a huge instrumental, ‘The Darkness’ and a ‘Reprise’. Primal Fear improved their sound to the max and again the orchestra arrangements by Matz Ulmer and Mat Sinner reached a incredible new heights.

But not only this part of Primal Fear’s music sounds reloaded today and more powerful than ever before. The album opener ‘Sign Of Fear’ metals like hell with extreme and very sovereign vocals by Ralph, followed by the cool paced melodic highlight ‘Face The Emptiness’. More typical songs like ‘Blood On Your Hands’, ‘Psycho’ or ‘Too Much Time’ will please Fear’s Nuclear Fire fans, while the title track ‘New Religion’, ‘The Curse Of Sharon’ and ‘World On Fire’ show Primal Fear at their best, with a combination between powerful riffs and fantastic melodies. “The real metal songs like “Sign Of Fear”, “Blood On Your Hands” or “New Religion” are sounding 100% like Primal Fear, but still different” explains Mat Sinner, “I really love the vibe and that I feel a progress in our work, that there is still space for a new step into creativity. Even the fast, but very melodic tracks like “Face The Emptiness” or “The Curse Of Sharon” sounding fresh, new and exciting!”
The album’s final song ‘The Man (that I don’t know)’ is a very strong and outstanding ballad, with superb vocal and guitar performances!

Two video clips were produced for ‘Fighting The Darkness’ and ‘Sign Of Fear’ which appear as bonuses for the album’s limited edition in digipak. In Ralph Scheepers’ words: “Sign Of Fear’ shows the powerful side of Primal Fear in a raging performance clip, while ‘Fighting The Darkness’ is more like acting on a crime scene. After the night shot of Sign Of Fear until 5am in the morning, we were all tried to death, but the concept of “Fighting The Darkness” was such a great challenge for everyone, we really gave more than 200% to look & act good”. Mat Sinner announces: “We will start our tour in the US this time and co-headline the Progpower Festival in Atlanta. For the first time, we will perform a bunch of songs from the new album on stage! Then we will embark on a double headliner tour together with our friends of U.D.O. through Europe, plus a yet undecided special guest. In December we will tour Japan and Korea, plus some more Xmas shows in Europe. Then we’re working on dates in South America, the US & Canada for early 2008!”

There are three albums in KISS discography that are hotly debated amongst the KISS Army: DESTROYER (1976), (Music from) THE ELDER (1981). and REVENGE (1992). All of these albums were produced by “genius-producer” Bob Ezrin and each marks a significant, and controversial, time in the band’s history. DESTROYER was a success, and launched the band to super stardom, because of it’s diversity. It was this diversity that also led On the other hand, THE ELDER helped plunge the band into Rock’s toilet because of the experimental concept and un-KISS like sound. Would the teaming of Ezrin and KISS bring a formula for success? Or would the band’s credibility plummet again after a successful run in the mid-late ’80s?

There were other factors that made REVENGE a controversial record:

  • First, and most importantly, long-time drummer, Eric Carr died On November 24, 1991. Eric’s replacement was Eric Singer (ex-Black Sabbath/Badlands/Lita Ford) who stepped in while Carr was still alive to keep the band’s recording commitments on schedule.
  • Second, Vinnie Vincent was brought back into the fold for songwriting. Vincent’s songwriting was instrumental in KISS’ comeback with CREATURES OF THE NIGHT (1982) and LICK IT UP (1983).
  • Third, Gene Simmons decided it was time to focus on the business of KISS rather than trying to be an actor and music producer.

REVENGE is a harder album than previous efforts CRAZY NIGHTS (1987) and HOT IN THE SHADE (1989). Some people believe the band were trying to cash in on the current Grunge movement while others felt the band had returned to the raw crunch of the early days in the ’70s. The image is more aligned with the early KISS: black, leather, dirty, dangerous.

Opening the album is the Simmons/Vincent collaboration, ‘Unholy’. When I first heard this song all I could think about was something sinister. There is a simple guitar riff that just sounds ominous while Gene’s vocal harkens back to yesteryear’s Demon a la ‘God Of Thunder’. This track set the tone for the album, hearing ‘Unholy’ let the listeners know that the band had gotten heavier and that this was the best song by Gene in at least a decade. Surprisingly, this was also the first single and video off the album, the band had major success in the ’80s by releasing Paul Stanley material as singles.

‘Take It Off’ is pure Paul Stanley: uptempo and sexually charged, this is the typical KISS single. Basically an ode to strippers and strip clubs with some excellent guitar. The breakdown mid-song just seems unnecessary as the song cruises along with out it. Paul Stanley song #2, ‘Tough Love’, has a thick gritty sound, very bass heavy. The vocals are clean but the music has a beefed up sound. It’s a decent song but Paul’s vocal, the title, and the music don’t mesh well…..a better Gene song maybe? I like it but it’s a question mark.

The two worst songs on the album are next: ‘Spit’ and ‘God Gave Rock’n’Roll To You II’. ‘Spit’ is an absolute rip-off of Spinal Tap’s ‘Big Bottom’, read any serious review and it will be mentioned. It’s one of those typical Gne songs that would thankfully get buried on Side 2 of earlier records. The only redeeming quality is the Paul Stanley sung break before the chorus with the Bruce Kulick machine gun riff. I’ll give the song credit for heavy guitar but the solo with ‘Star Spangled Banner’ pieces is awful. The second tune originally appeared on the BILL & TED’S BOGUS JOURNEY Movie Soundtrack (1991) and was a released single. It was later added to the album for momentum and to mark Eric Carr’s last contribution to the band by providing backing vocals. It’s a reworking of the original song by Argent…’s basically a cover song. I don’t mind ‘God Gave…..’ in moderation but it always seems to be a highlight of many a KISS concert or DVD, it fills the quota as an anthem and a ballad. The one thing the song does have is some good Gene & Paul harmonies.

Gene Simmons bounces back from the terrible ‘Spit’ with ‘Domino’. This is Gene Simmons so the lyrical content follows a familiar theme: a bad girl and what Gene wants to do, etc. In the past this has been hit or miss for Gene but the music and arrangement is perfect if the lyrics are not. This was a single and video as well but only aired on MTV late at night. I like ‘Heart Of Chrome’, it has that slow chugging riff that drives the song, totally guitar driven with a solid backline. It’s not your typical “happy Paul” song, it has a darker edge to it, perhaps the Vinnie Vincent influence? This is the second song Vincent contributed to. Silent Rage’s Jesse Damon co-writes with Simmons on ‘Thou Shalt Not’ and the song is pretty good. It’s heavy, has a raw, gritty quality to it. Gene’s vocals are rough and ready…..the Gene of old. The only drawback is the chorus: repetitive and simple. That’s how KISS writes songs though. Overall, I’d say it’s much better than ‘Spit’ but not as good as ‘Unholy’.

If this is a KISS record, then Paul Stanley has to have a ballad. ‘Everytime I Look At You’ fits the bill complete with acoustics and orchestration. Obviously this was meant to be the slow song of the album before the inclusion of ‘God Gave…..” and it is much better than Bill & Ted’s anthem. KISS ballads are hit or miss: ‘Beth’ hit, ‘Hard Luck Woman’ missed…..’Reason To Live’ fell short, ‘Forever’ went Top 10. ‘Every Time I Look At You’ picks up a bit with the orchestration in the middle but the charm is the superb vocal and acoustic guitar. This is probably one of the most underrated tracks on REVENGE but it was released as a single/video late in the album’s life.

‘Paralyzed’ is another hard Gene penned number that is great until Bob Ezrin messes with it. Halfway through the song, just before the solo, there’s a breakdown with some audio trickery, obviously an Ezrin contribution. I’m not knocking Ezrin, the guy has writing credits all over the album and the album is solid but sometimes less is more. Paul Stanley ends the proper songs with a party time, sing-a-long track ‘I Just Wanna’. Full of KISS cliches and nuance, this is ’80s style KISS with a beefed up guitar. The chorus is weak but it becomes a crowd favorite in concert when Paul plays to the crowd. The harmonized breakdown mid-song is extremely annoying but the song continues with it’s natural groove. ‘I Just Wanna’ is a good song despite that breakdown and is the third co-written song with Vinnie Vincent.

As a tribute to their fallen bandmate and friend, the band tacks on the Eric Carr instrumental ‘Carr Jam 1981’. The history on this track is that this was the only drum solo properly recorded by Carr in the studio and had been languishing in Bob Ezrin’s personal vaults since THE ELDER sessions. The original take included Ace Frehley on lead guitar but he was replaced by Bruce Kulick for this recording. The basis of this song was used for ‘Breakout’ on the first Frehley’s Comet album in 1987. From what I have read from numerous sources, Eric Carr didn’t even own a copy of this solo as it had been buried as a discarded idea when the band went conceptual for THE ELDER. This instrumental shows how talented Eric Carr was and perhaps that he was held back by the Gene & Paul tag team. It would be interesting to hear of Eric Carr was allowed to let loose on the kit.

Bottom Line:
Back in 1992, this album was a winner and I still think it is to this day. Take away ‘Spit’ and ‘God Gave Rock’n’Roll To You II’ and the rest is extremely solid and good. If you look at KISS in the late ’80s, it was all about following trends to be successful, trying to be like the Bon Jovis and Def Leppards of the era. In ’92, with the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal scene faltering, the band comes up with their hardest album since ANIMALIZE (1984).

The production is flawless, although I could pass on some of the breakdowns mid-song (‘I Just Wanna, ‘Paralyzed). The sound is thick and beefed up but I wouldn’t say that it’s Grunge or Alternative, more like a heavier KISS. Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer put in solid performances across the album and both are underrated as to their contributions. It’s still the Gene & Paul show and it’s good to have Mr. Simmons focused on the band. Aside from one or two songs, Gene puts in a long overdue solid performance vocally and writing wise.

A good solid album that was a bit unexpected considering the circumstances surrounding the recording (R.I.P. – Eric Carr). Favorites here: ‘Unholy’. ‘Domino’, ‘Heart Of Chrome’, ‘I Just Wanna’, and ‘Paralyzed’.

Lucky for me, each store is located on a half mile strip about 5 minutes from my house so I will have all 3 versions. Another excellent set by the band, I am especially looking forward to the Crazy Nights Tour footage because that is the first time I saw KISS (in Providence, RI). More info as it comes…..

The last time I heard anything about American Angel was back in 1998 when the band released a 2CD set titled ARCHIVES. I had just started on the Net and I remember reading about the band on various message boards. With all that buzz, I tracked down some samples of the E.P. the band released in 1992, and I liked what I heard. I have been a lucky collector in the last couple of years in acquiring copies of the both the debut album (1989) and the E.P. (1992) and the band has become a “lost” favorite. Fast forward 15 years…..the band has reformed, is touring, and has released this brand new album on Chavis Records.

So what do you get on the band’s latest offering, VANITY? You get some good ol’ fashioned late ’80s Hard Rock! American Angel hasn’t strayed far from their signature sound from Hard Rock’s heyday in the late ’80s/early ’90s: great vocals, superb guitar, tight rhythm section, and solid songs. A winning formula then and in 2007.

VANITY starts off with ‘While I’m Away’, a quick intro piece with some elegant piano that shoots straight into the first barnburner ‘Pantomind’. This song gets the album into high gear and has chugging groove, the vocals sound like John Corabi in his Union days, some grit along with power. The title track has a guitar hook that just sucks the listener right in and Rocco’s vocals are definitely in your face. Three songs in and I’m already pumping my fist, there’s an energy in this band that you can’t escape, almost a live feeling. There’s a couple of audio samples mixed into this song just before the guitar solo but it doesn’t take anything away from the song itself.

There’s a Sleaze Glam feel to ‘On The Hunt’. It’s a mid-paced song that has that sleazy groove going like a slow L.A. Guns or GNR… can picture a guy out “on the hunt” walking down a street with all sorts of women around…..OK, that’s for a video I guess. Definitely has that late ’80s strut. ‘Seven’ immeadiately follows with the same mid-paced style. This one I haven’t gotten into yet. Maybe it’s because it follows a similar song in ‘On The Hunt’ but I think it’s that Rocco Fury gets drowned out by the backing vocals. I like the solo here and the crashing drums but not my favorite song so far.

‘Warm Inside’ is one of my favorites on the record. This ballad starts off with a subdued acoustic intro and the band comes in adding a nice melodic texture. Fury’s delivery is a little cleaner, less grit, and sounds a little like Sebastian Bach at times. When a song has that underlying acoustic guitar throughout the song, it usually grabs my attention. The electric guitar doesn’t overpower the acoustic when it kicks in, it just adds another layer. I like the fact that the song ends much the way it began with the acoustic. ‘Don’t Wait Up’ has a Ratt feel to it a la ‘Way Cool Jr.’. It’s uptempo and has that guitar strut mixed with big backing vocals in the chorus. It definitely has a groove to it but it sounds like it’s missing something. It probably could be a little heavier.

There’s a more contemporary feel to ‘Breathe’, an updated sound, but is that a talk-box I hear? What I like is that American Angel can retain their signature sound and expand on it, this could get airplay on today’s Rock radio. ‘Breathe’ is mid-paced but there is power to the track. Solid vocals again but listen to the drums, they drive the song. ‘In Perfection’ has become another favorite off the album. Definitely a dated sound (in a good way), there’s a great hook in the chorus and you can sing right along. Great guitar work here, very good solo, a definite highlight.

The band gets a little more modern again with ‘End Of The Night’ and the song sounds a little out of place against the rest of the album so far. The main guitar riff sounds like it needs a little more meat to it and the drum patterns seem a little off pace. Mid-song there is a complete style change, it’s not pure Hard Rock, more like Spanish flavored or European. Vocally, I noticed that I hear a little bit of a young Jack Russell (Great White) in Rocco’s singing. I wonder if he has been compared to Bach, Corabi, and Russell before because it’s a great blend of blues and power.

Another acoustic guitar during ‘Another Day’ and I’m immeadiately hooked. Excellent vocal harmonies and guitars. The Bach/Russell style vocal fits in well with the music. This is a ballad/mid-tempo track that is straight up ’80s flavored. This gets added in to my list of favorites from this album. Things get heavier a bit heavier on ‘Turns To Grey’. Heavier and faster with some true guitar heroics, this track serves as a showcase for the twin axe attack. ‘Permanent Pause’ keeps things rocking although it’s a little slower than the rest of the rockers on this record. There are some interesting guitar tones that keeps the audiences attention. There are also those big backing harmonies that make the song sound richer. The last song is a remixed version of ‘Don’t Wait Up’ and it doesn’t stray too far from the original. I still think it has a Ratt vibe to it but there still seems to be something missing on this track.

Bottom Line:

If you are a fan of late ’80s/early ’90s Hard Rock, or a fan of American Angel, then this album is definitely for you. VANITY is full of superb guitars, a solid rhythm section, and an excellent set of pipes. The band writes some very good songs, my favorites are: ‘Pantomind’, ‘Warm Inside’, ‘Vanity’, ‘Turns To Grey’, and ‘Another Day’. The album is a great listen and well worth your hard earned money. Hopefully, we will hear more from American Angel in the future and we won’t have to wait long between releases. Those interested should seek out the band’s self-titled debut from 1989 and the E.P. from 1992, they are a little hard to find but worth the effort.
