When you visit Aces Wyld on MySpace, take a look at their general info where it says “Sounds like”. The answer is plain and simple: Hard Fuckin’ Rock! It’s true, this five song E.P. comes out punching with a heavy ’70s Hard Rock crunch that goes straight for the throat. You can hear the Ted Nugent influence right away. Also some Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, and maybe some early Judas Priest.

What jumps out right away is the fat bass and big drums. It’s a raw and heavy production and the backend sounds very thick, a ’70s trademark. Jason Scherer’s guitar sounds like a cross between early Glenn Tipton and the Nuge, take a serious listen to the solo in ‘Runnin’ Strong’….wow! The guy is just coming out and playing riff after riff without all the guitar hero noodling. Dan Johnston’s voice is a bit scratchy/gritty kind of like a Paul D’ianno from Maiden’s early days crossed with Uncle Ted.  It’s the rawness that makes the music and vocals blend perfectly. This ’70s Rock groove doesn’t work well with a guy hitting high falsettos all over the song, this is about power and balls!

Bottom Line:
I’ve been spinning this E.P. for a couple of weeks and it just sounds so fresh to me. I’m also a big fan of ’70s Hard Rock/Metal so it appeals to me. Solid music all around, not a bad song in the bunch, very good stuff. Favorites of the five tracks: ‘Wyld Tonite’ & ‘Runnin’ Strong’. For a band that just over a year old, this is some great music, I can’t wait to check out the new E.P. that the band is currently working on.

  1. in the par that you say This ’70s Rock groove doesn’t work well with a guy hitting high falsettos all over the song, this is about power and balls! i think you hit the spot cuz i think their singer actually sucks balls the should get a new one cuz the groovve going on in their songs its not to be mix with hair metal wanna be singer

  2. Hey “Metal Lord”, I think before you start talking about balls you might try growing a pair. Yes I am a little bit off here and there but I thought over all for the amount of money we spent and the time we had it came out pretty damn good, especially considering it was our first time in a studio. I’d like to hear what you’ve put out but for some reason I doubt your a musician, in fact im pretty sure you jut sit on your ass in front of the computer eating doritos trashing other peoples work because you have no talent and cant get laid.

  3. Well Dan from Aces Wyld checked in…..good to have you here! I liked the EP very much as stated in the review. I really don’t have a problem with the vocals as they fit the sound. I think that as the band grows and expands their sound then Dan will have to expand his range if the music calls for it. I disagree with Metal Lord, Dan doesn’t suck, his vocals are raw and gritty, a good type for the Music. He’s not Glenn Hughes but, then again, who is? LOL!

  4. Thank you sir! Yeah as I said I know I’m off here and there and yeah I could use some work. Everything was done in one take and if I had it to do all over again it would probably come out much better but as it is I’m happy with it. It just pisses me off when jackasses like “metal lord” trash somebody based on their influences. Yeah I like hair metal, that doesn’t mean I don’t also like hard rock. In fact Hair Metal is just hard rock with poofier hair.
