WANTED: Foreigner – Can’t Slow Down (2009)

Foreigner – Can’t Slow Down (2009)

I know a lot of people see the name Foreigner and all they think of is ballads like ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ and ‘Waiting For A Girl Like You’ but back in the late ’70s/early ’80s the band put out some seriously crunching Arena Rock. I’m not afraid to admit that I like Classic Rock bands like Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon and Foreigner…..they were staples on FM radio when I was a kid. I caught Foreigner in concert opening for Def Leppard & Styx back in August 2007 and they were really great live. Lou Gramm has been gone for a few years and founding member Lou Gramm enlisted new singer Kelly Hansen (former Hurricane vocalist) and he really added new life to a lot of old classics. That brings us to 2009 and Foreigner signed an exclusive deal with retail giant Wal-Mart to release their latest album, CAN’T SLOW DOWN. Just like The Eagles, KISS, Journey and AC/DC, Foreigner added 2 bonus discs to the new album: a bonus CD of re-recorded hits and a live DVD. I have passed on this CD a number of times despite all the rave reviews I read online. I hate going into Wal-Mart for anything, 3 out of the last 4 times were to pick up a CD, the 4th to return something right after Christmas. The price is right ($14), the package is a great deal for the price and the reviews all say it’s a great record but I just haven’t gotten around to getting it. The album is readily available at any Wal-Mart so I’m going to have to go into one of them soon and pick this CD up.

  1. It is definitely worth it – I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It rocks quite a bit, but even the mid-tempo AOR tracks sound great to my ears. You may be able to find it cheaper used on Amazon or through a CD swap site like swapacd. Cheers –Bill

  2. I like FOREIGNER too. They are maybe the softesed hard rock band i like to play together with REO SPEEDWAGON, JOURNEY or SURVIVOR for exemple. I dont have their new album yet but the last thing i bought by them was a dvd recorded live at a german festival (BANG YOUR HEAD), a pure heavy metal and hard rock festival and they gave a realy great show in front of metalheads. They only played the heavier songs and people realy liked it.

  3. definitely worth it. the 2nd disc is remixed songs, not re-recorded versions. the remixes are not club/dance remixes – just the kind of remixing and remastering that would go on during a reissue. they sound great although there isn’t much wrong with the originals.

  4. long time reader (keep up the great work, steve!), first time poster, because I gotta say: foreigner rules! and, to be honest, I’m a bit surprised to see them here – not that I mind.

it took almost a month for this album to arrive to me at the end of last year, cost me quite a bit of money as well, and the weird thing is, I still haven’t lisented to it, not once. I’ve been waiting for a new album since the first time I’ve heard too late (on their latest greatest hits album), so it’s a mystery…

well, actually it isn’t. when I listen to some new material for the first time, I like to sit down, shut out the world around me, concentrate on the music and read the lyrics at the same time. however, the package doesn’t contain the lyrics, and I couldn’t even find them online (still can’t, actually), that’s why the empty digipak packaging is collecting dust on my shelf.

yes, empty, because this has to be one of the worst packaged cds ever. looks ok, yes, but it’s useless. it took ages to get the discs out without any scratches and I immediatly put them in more secure cd trays. this and the lack of lyrics turned me down so much so that I still haven’t given the cd a spin. maybe sometime this year. in the meantime, I have 3 unwatched foreigner dvds sitting on the shelf, waiting to be watched.

I did listen to the 2nd cd, though, but since I’m fine with the original versions (can’t even tell the difference really), I won’t bother with it again, I prefer full albums to compilations anyway. the dvd looks promising though, even if their setlist doesn’t seem to change much.

got a bit carried away there, sorry about that.
